National Tell A Joke Day is August 16

07/08/2022

Elizabeth Moreau Nikolai is a Youth Services Coordinator at the Anchorage Public Library and sent us these great ideas for National Tell A Joke Day on August 16th. She's created both an Easy Program and one that's a little more advanced with a back-to-school twist. These are easy to implement and guaranteed to get your patrons ROTFL! You can find Elizabeth on Twitter at @lizinthelibrary. Thanks, Elizabeth, for sharing these fantastic ideas!

Easy Program:

  • Put out some joke books on a table/display near your desk
  • Put out a sign about National Tell A Joke Day and promising stickers for any children who come to the desk and tell a library staff member a joke
  • All day long laugh at kids jokes and hand out stickers
  • Record stats!

Slightly more advanced program with a back to school twist:

  • Same as above
  • Put out blank cards or print out “lunchbox joke cards” templates.
  • Encourage students to write out or decorate small cards with jokes on them that can be slipped in lunchboxes or back packs. I’ve been slipping these into my own daughter’s lunch box and she adores reading the joke to her friends at lunch. Kids can make a set for themselves, for their friends/siblings. Adults can make a set for their children. Etc.
  • There are a LOT of lunchbox joke card templates. I am attaching one. You can also use a blank template or even just blank index cards that kids can write the jokes out by hand from the books we put on the table. More templates:

Supplies needed:

  • Joke books from collection
  • Stickers or tattoos

Advanced program:

  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Blank note cards and/or joke card templates
