Cook Up Your Own Fairy Tale with the British Library

01/11/2023

Beat the winter blahs by cooking up your own fairy tales with this free program brought to you by the British Library! Starting January 25, they are hosting an online program to help kids create their own fun fairy tales following the age-old "recipes" for fairy and folk tales. Click here for more information: https://www.bl.uk/childrens-books/activities/cook-up-your-own-fairy-tale

Fairy tales and folk tales follow certain formulas that have been around for generations. They're usually short, feature certain types of recognizable characters, like a hero or heroine, a villain, and a bit of magic. These stories transcend cultures, from the Far East, to Indigenous peoples of all continents, and from place to place, they are often quite similar in nature. For example, most people are familiar with the French version of Cinderella, which has many of the same features as the Vietnamese tale of The Golden Slipper, and the Ojibwe story of Sootface. They are all stories of a put-upon young girl whose sisters or step-sisters make her do all the dirty work, but in the end she marries a prince, or a handsome man that the other sisters want to marry, because of her hard work and a bit of magic involving a special shoe.

The British Library's program will feature free online resources including webinars for which you can register, including a children's workshop on February 1. So cook up a storm with their fairy tale recipes and share the creative thoughts of your kids!
