Honoring MLK

01/16/2023

Today in the US, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This is an especially great year to think about him, as both of the Summer Reading Programs speak to this message of unity and using your voice to do what is right. Dr. King and his wife, Coretta Scott King, spent their adult lives employing nonviolence to effect change in the discriminatory policies that were rampant in the American South and elsewhere at the time.

Dr. King is perhaps best known for his moving "I Have a Dream Speech" given to a crowd of over 250,000 in Washington, D.C, on August 28, 1963.  This speech was full of inspiration, of words dedicated to joining people together as one. He believed that ". . . With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood." Many of the things he dreamed about have come to pass, however, as we know, there is still work to be done to achieve true equality among all races, creeds and genders in our nation.

In another of his famous works, "Letter from Birmingham Jail", Dr. King wrote: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly." This is why working together, lifting our voices, to achieve unity is so important still today.

To find out more about this national holiday, we recommend the book "Martin Luther King, Jr. Day", by Betsy Rathburn, available in our catalog here: https://www.penworthy.com/itemlisting/collections/AllPenworthyTitles/MartinLutherKingJrDay/1/53158/0.
