June 4: National Hug Your Cat Day
Do you have a cat? Studies say that 38% of US households
have at least one cat, with the average household having 1.8 cats. Cats are often seen as aloof and
stand-offish, but most cat owners feel otherwise. Cats can even be trained to do things like “high five” and
come when
called. Cats have been a big part of pop culture for millennia, with
Egyptians worshiping the cat goddess Bastet (cats have never
forgotten this) and more recently, people everywhere collecting Hello Kitty paraphernalia. The earliest
animated movie was not about a certain mouse, it was about Felix the Cat, a
character whose popularity has continued for over 100 years.
A quick internet search of “cat videos” reveals how much we
love our cats. Cats doing
funny things, cats with grumpy
expressions, cats being
cats, all of these are among many peoples’ favorite videos and discussion
topics. Research has found that hugging
your feline friend is extremely effective at helping to lessen symptoms
associated with major illnesses, helps with loneliness, depression, anxiety,
and stress. The benefit of hugging your cat is not just beneficial for you but
also for your kitty. Kitties also benefit mentally and physically by the human
animal interaction associated with hugging.
Currently, the most popular breed of purebred cat in the US
is Siamese, known for their big blue eyes and quirky personalities. If you’ve never been around this elegant
breed, watching the video for “We Are Siamese If You Please”
from Disney’s Lady & the Tramp might convince you they are high strung,
demanding cats, which this writer can attest to, having been considered “staff”
by four different Siamese cats over the course of 30 years. On the flip side, they are friendly, curious,
and very smart.
That said, 95% of the world's cat population consists of
rescue, stray, and otherwise non-pedigreed cats. No matter how humble or regal
their origins, we love them all. To feed your patrons’ love of cats, Penworthy
has a wide array of books
about cats, including both fiction and nonfiction, ready to ship the next
business day at no cost to you.
So grab your favorite feline and give them a big squeeze for
National Hug Your Cat Day! It’s good for you – and your cat!
