Book Review: “The Newest Princess” by Melody Mews, with illustrations by Ellen Stubbings
Itty Bitty Kitty and her friend Luna the Unicorn are playing
in a field of flowers when an Announcement Fairy tells Itty that she is about
to become a princess! Since her parents are the king and queen, Itty knew this day
would come, but now it’s really happening, so she starts thinking about all the
cool things that could happen when she becomes Itty Bitty Princess Kitty. She and Luna daydream about things like not
having to clean her room and wearing fancy princess clothes.
Then Itty thinks of other things, like how princesses should
behave, and whether she will still be able to do the fun things she loves with
her friends. Once she is a princess, will she be able to run and jump and go
camping? Are princesses allowed to do things like that? When her parents tell her
of the special preparations that she will have to go through, and about her new
tutor who will palace school her, Itty becomes even more upset.
Everyone knows that change is hard, even when that change
may be something you are looking forward to doing. This book shows us how that
feels, in ways that can help kids understand their own anxieties about change
and even advocate for themselves, just as Itty Bitty Kitty does. It might be
just the thing for a child headed to a new school, or a new classroom with
different classmates. In an easy-to-read format with fun illustrations, this
book will hook young readers on Itty Bitty Princess Kitty’s adventures in
Lollyland. Find the series here.
