The Christmas Pig

According to Alex O'Connell, reviewing the book for The Times, "The Harry Potter author’s Christmas tale is like Toy Story with a dash of existentialism".  She goes on to say, "Ever wondered what happens to all those little things we lose: the earring that falls into the gutter, the comb down the side of the sofa, the toy bunny dropped from the buggy? And that’s just the thing Things. How about abandoned attributes: happiness, ambition, hope, optimism, power? Where do they live when they leave us?"

This hefty, gorgeous book dropped just today, and is broken into nine parts with 58 total chapters. The protagonist, Jack, loves is favorite stuffed toy, Dur Pig, aka DP. DP has been his partner through thick and thin, good and bad, including Jack's parents' divorce, moving to a new house, all the things kids dread. On Christmas Eve, the worst has happened--DP is lost, thrown from the car on the highway by Jack's new stepsister, Holly. In an effort to make it up to  him, Holly finds Jack an identical new pig, but as every child knows, it's not the same, and never will be.

Late that night, Jack is awoken by the Christmas Pig and some of his other toys, who make him a fantastic offer--they will take him to the Land of the Lost, where he can possibly retrieve DP. Of course Jack agrees, and thus begins an incredible adventure. The New York Times says, "Unashamedly encouraging in the tradition of the great 19th-century storytellers, Rowling has written a marvelously persuasive fantasy for our times, one that looks back to the past in its determination to enlighten and console." "The Harry Potter author gives us her Christmas Carol, and it’s a triumph," writes Amanda Craig of The Evening Standard

Perfect as a read aloud for families or for independent reading by more advanced readers, this lush book is illustrated by Jim Field. We have it in stock and ready to ship. You'll find it in our catalog here.
